"In this 15-credit certificate, which can be completed fully online, students will develop familiarity with the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and cultural characteristics of Spanish-speakers in the US; heritage language educational policy and practice; and social justice-oriented, antiracist approaches to teaching Spanish. The certificate prepares aspiring and in-service educators and affiliated professionals to advocate for heritage speakers of Spanish as well as to develop and implement teaching curricula, materials, and pedagogies for Spanish heritage language education. Educators seeking professional development opportunities and graduate students at other universities are also welcome to enroll in individual courses as non-degree students. Please see descriptions for the SHLE courses that will be offered this Fall 2021".

We'll discuss a wide range of approaches to HL research, as well as the pedagogical implications of that research. The course is also designed to promote students’ critical analytical ability regarding the underlying assumptions of HL research studies and pedagogical proposals. For their final project, students can choose to focus on HL research, policy or pedagogy. Taught in English but students may submit written work in Spanish.
